In 1938 joined climbers Lloyd and Mary Anderson with 21 other Northwest climbers to found Recreational Equipment Inc. (REI). Today, REI is the largest consumer cooperative in the nation with more than 2.8 million members. Although the exchange sold by REI looks very different now than it did in 1938, remains central to REI as a co-operative. While non-members are invited to shop at REI, only members enjoy special benefits including a member of the annual refund on eligible purchases. REI’s business success has enabled the co-op to return member refunds to its active members in 2005 totaling more than $ 50 million and provide $ 2.5 million in donations to support outdoor recreation and to ‘open.
